Peak of the Chum Salmon Run

Chum Salmon Fly Fishing

A female chum salmon showing her spawning colors and spawning teeth. The male teeth are even more exaggerated.

The peak of the chum salmon run at our OUTPOST camp occurs from late June to mid July. They attack bright streamers in pink, purple, chartreuse and black, and can put a solid bend in a 7 weight fly rod – sometimes an 8 weight is more appropriate.

Past multi-year studies have shown that 10,000 to 17,000 chum salmon run up OUTPOST creek during the summer months, so you’re likely to catch good numbers of these tenacious, bulldog-like fighters.
