Don’t skimp on your rain gear, have realistic expectations and expect the unexpected – not every day is a brochure day fishing in remote Alaska.

There’s a wide range of personalities, of course – from the gregarious story teller, to the excellent teacher, to the slightly awkward introvert who thrives in the wilderness more than the big city.

Hope springs eternal for the consummate angler, and the more things you can look at through the lens of an angler surveying a piece of water, the better you will be at seeing the best of things during the worst of times. This is not to say that the news wasn’t a let down. It felt like a huge part of my life had just evaporated overnight.

Sometimes I find myself shaking my head in disbelief of the raw beautify of the Pacific side of the Alaska Peninsula. All who have spent time out here fishing or hiking or soaking in Mother Nature, even if for only a week, are truly lucky people.
