Choose Your Fly 2

04.21.17

Umpqua, Solitude and Rainy’s makes many of our favorite Alaska flies.

There are numerous productive patterns that work well fly fishing in Alaska for the various species of salmon, rainbow trout, Dolly Varden and grayling. And by no means are we going to get into this one is better than that one. You know, the perpetual Ford vs. Chevy debate. And if you’re mouth is already opening to comment on that, just take a breath, man, and go fishing!

Some of our best Alaska flies (in no particular order):

Salmon: Hot shot comet, starlight leech, dolly llama, kilowatt, hare leech, skagit minnow, pepper head and just about any intruder variance. Our favorite colors (in order of preference) are pink, purple, chartreuse, black, orange.

Rainbow trout and Dolly Varden: Morrish mouse, starlight leech, dolly llama, Willie Nelson, wooly bugger, flesh fly, krystal bugger, glo bug, beads.

Grayling: Wooly bugger, glo bug, beads, adams, royal wulff, elk hair caddis, pheasant tail.
